Chapter Ten

Lucy and Harriet laid on their cots in silence. The canvas sides of the pod whipped in and out like ragged breathing. The breeze felt good coming through the open window. The scent of pine and Starstruck’s wild cabbage soup wafted into their tree house hideaway. Harriet had her hands behind her head and her feet crossed at the ankle. She turned her head, looked at Lucy, and uttered reverently, “I love this place.”

“It is nice. Thank you for bringing me here,” Lucy said. She’d been thinking of Piper and her green eyes and long dark eyelashes. She liked how her nose turned up just the tiniest bit. She was a small package—like a piece of jewelry, worth a lot, but contained in a small, velvet-covered box.

“What did you think of the lawyer?” Harriet asked.

“Um… she’s not as bad as she could’ve been.”

Harriet leaned up on one elbow and squinted at Lucy. “What’s that mean?”

“She could’ve been a real bitch. I don’t think she’s very enthused about kicking us out of here.”

Harriet considered this. “And Ted was nice for a land rapist.”

“He did say that his company deals mostly with old growth forests. He’s more of a caretaker. Even Barb agreed that was necessary or the dead trees were nothing but fuel for forest fires.”

“Okay, let’s give him points for surgical strikes,” Harriet said, rolling her eyes.

Lucy sat up and tucked her legs under. “Do you think they’re gay?”

“Ted is,” Harriet said.

“How can you be sure?”

“He told me that his husband works as a game warden.”

“Yep, that’d do it. When did you talk to him?” Lucy asked.

“While you all were conferring with Miss Lawyer Pants.”

“Oh. How about Piper? You get a gay vibe?”

Harriet shrugged. “I don’t know for sure. Those hardcore business types are hard to decipher. I mean, does she hate men because she gets fucked over in the workplace, so she refuses to date them, or is she a lesbian? Why do you want to know so badly?” Harriet asked, eyeing her.

“I just wondered,” Lucy said too quickly and much too innocently.

The dinner gong rang. Harriet sprang to her feet. “Let’s go get some yummy stew,” she said. “Do you still have that stash of Snickers bars?

“Yes, why?”

“Don’t eat too much stew. It’ll clean out your pipes but good. Remember the latrine is not just down the hall,” Harriet said.

“Got it.”

“The acorn cakes aren’t too bad. Fill up on those instead.”

“I’ll keep that mind,” Lucy said. She’d already lost weight since she’d gotten here. The vegan thing was stealing away her fat deposits. She craved cheeseburgers and dreamed of French fries. She felt disloyal to Starstruck, but her stomach felt no guilt. Oh god, what she wouldn’t give for a chocolate milkshake.
